2016 NYCMER Annual Conference: Intersections

Museums are increasingly recognizing the importance of community engagement and reaching a diverse audience. But strategies for engaging our community and expanding our audience are too often determined from within an institution. How can we use alternative strategies, grassroots models, and leverage existing civic-minded neighbors to build meaningful and sustainable partnerships within the community? Participants will learn about real experiments, successes, and failures in building one's community base within small museum and arts environments. We will consider how our personal connections to community, our own strengths as well as our limitations can lead us to build not only community engagement, but community connectedness.
